Goals and Learning
Career Goals
I intend to pursue the accelerated Bachelor's of Science in
Health Services Management/Master's of Healthcare
Administration 4 + 1 program. This program allows me
to start my Master's education during the 4th year of my
Bachelor's degree program. If I am accepted, I will finish
with my Master's of Healthcare Administration in
December of 2027.
I want to use my leadership skills and passion about
equitable healthcare to help rectify health disparities for
minority groups. I want to work for a non-profit healthcare
organization that focuses on underserved communities.
A career in Healthcare Administration will allow me to
influence the healthcare community in a positive way,
especially for minority groups that are currently underserved.

My internship has completely opened my eyes to the world
of health equity interventions. Before my internship, I had no
idea that a hospital like Eskenazi could have a team dedicated to improving the social determinants of health for their patients. Working with Eskenazi has fostered my passion for improving health equity. It has confirmed my desire to work for a non-profit healthcare organization that makes an effort to serve underserved communities. I feel that I have a good understanding of what type of environment I want to work in.

In my goals, I stated that I wanted to build a strong relationship with my supervisor and network with people in the field. I have successfully achieved both of these goals. My relationship with my supervisor is incredible, and I have had the opportunity to meet leaders at Eskenazi through meetings. My internship has helped me discover my healthcare administration goals and desire to work in a non-profit setting, contrary to my goal of becoming an epidemiologist when I applied. I have been able to gain experience working with leaders in healthcare and working with health equity through my internship, which has inspired me to pursue a career related to this work instead of working as an epidemiologist.

Next semester, I will be an FYS peer mentor, and I am pursuing a TA position as well. I will be applying to the MHA accelerated program next December. I plan on finding a summer internship for the summer of 2026. I am working on pursuing an internship with a non-profit healthcare organization in Indianapolis for this coming fall. Doing so will help me confirm my desire to work for a non-profit healthcare organization in the future.

Goals
Learning Goal #1: I will improve both my oral and written communication skills and learn how best to apply them
How does this goal fit into your career journey or prepare you for the future?
I want to pursue a career as a health policy analyst. In this career, I will need extensive communication skills in order to collaborate with peers, supervisors, and other people who make policy decisions. Additionally, oral and written communication skills are extremely important in my future as an undergraduate student in order to form meaningful and lasting relationships with my peers, supervisors, and professors.
What tasks, responsibilities, projects, or activities will you do to meet this goal?
Interacting with members of the community to collect survey data
Email communication with the Eskenazi Health SDOH team
Work on a literature review and manuscript for the Culturally and Medically Tailored Food Options Project

Progress:
I have greatly improved my ability to communicate, especially across language barriers, through collecting surveys in clinics. I have also communicated with various members of the SDOH team. I also worked on a literature review for the diaper need project. I intend to work on speaking up more in meetings.

Learning Goal #2: I will gain skills on how to interact with a multidisciplinary leadership team that is working to rectify minority health inequities through the social determinants of health.
How does this goal fit into your career journey or prepare you for the future?
As a health policy analyst, I will need to be able to work effectively with a variety of people. I will need to be able to work with people from many different disciplines, whether they are doctors, health managers, or even government leaders. Working with a multidisciplinary team in my internship will allow me to gain experience in working with a diverse group of leaders.
What tasks, responsibilities, projects, or activities will you do to meet this goal?
Attending weekly SDOH integration meetings
Working with the Fresh for You market team to collect data and implement community-lead food options
Working with my co-intern to organize with the larger SDOH leadership team

Progress:
I have attended weekly SDOH meetings with larger groups of people from across Indianapolis. I have worked more predominantly with the diaper need team and project to collect surveys from patients across Indianapolis. I have succeeded in collecting over 100 diaper need surveys. I have also made connections with many members of the SDOH team through in person meetings.

Learning Goal #3: I will learn how to effectively advocate for health equity in minority communities and what we need to do to provide more inclusive health care for all in the community.

How does this goal fit into your career journey or prepare you for the future?
I am extremely passionate about advocating for health equity, so in my future career, I plan on focusing on this through health policy. I want to be able to make a difference through influencing health policy. Learning about health care in minority communities will allow me to gain first-hand experience in rectifying Social Determinants of Health in a community.

What tasks, responsibilities, projects, or activities will you do to meet this goal?
Improving food access to the Indianapolis immigrant community to improve health equity
Support the work on multiple health equity projects in the Eskenazi Health system
Advocating for the funding and sustainability of on-going health equity projects

Progress:
My internship has taught me so much about the behind the scenes work that goes into health equity interventions and progress. I have learned about the effects that diaper insecurity has on the parental experience. I was even inspired to do a class project on diaper insecurity to learn more about it. Through my work in the clinics, I have had a front row seat to the experiences of patients at Eskenazi Health Clinics.

Learning
Currently, I am growing my communication skills through stepping out of my comfort zone to collect surveys from patients in the clinic. I have learned how to approach patients and ask them if they will complete the survey, even when they speak a different language from me. I am working on my Spanish speaking skills to better communicate with Spanish speaking patients.
My independence has also grown through this work collecting surveys. I am able to go out to the clinics on my own and collect the surveys. Improving my Spanish speaking skills is also helping me work to confront challenges. I saw the language barrier challenge that I was encountering, so I decided to step up and find a way to rectify it. I've become much more independent in my work, and I am able to take initiative to work on projects independently.
One skill that I would like to continue working on is teamwork. I attend meetings, but I don't really contribute to the group cause. I will work on this by speaking up in meetings and adding a new point of view. I also want to work on my skills of integration and application. I can continue work on applying previously understood information, concepts, and experiences to a new situation or setting. I will do this by asking for new, more difficult tasks that will help me apply my previously learned skills. I can also work on seeking out more tasks that may lead to failure. This will allow me to work on adapting and overcoming challenges.
My internship has shown me what type of team I want to work with in my future career. The Social Determinants of Health team does such amazing work to help the underserved community of Indianapolis. They implement various projects, such as the diaper need and food projects that I'm working on, that act as interventions for health inequities. My internship has helped me realize that I want to work with a non-profit healthcare organization in the future, specifically one that works with an underserved community.
